Baracoa rebounds after Hurricane Matthew

Posted: 18-Mar-17 11:06

Cuba’s Baracoa is once again open for business- this is the message from the Gaviota Tourism Group after months of recovery efforts following the destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. The city is a major tourist attraction given its rich history, stunning views and unique gastronomical offerings.

Baracoa rebounds after Hurricane Matthew

As local folklore would have it, many years ago a tramp, known by the moniker "El Pelu", was kicked out of the Cuban town of Baracoa due to his impoverished state. After being outcast "El Pelu" placed a curse on the town and its inhabitants. Since then, many Baracoans have attributed their misfortunes, particularly those at the hand of Mother Nature, to the curse of "El Pelu".

In October 2016 Hurricane Matthew rampaged through Baracoa, Cuba’s first township, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Undoubtedly Hurricane Mathew’s destruction has renewed belief in El Pelu’s curse however the recovery efforts of local officials may well have broken the curse. Officials from the Gaviota Tourism Group are now happy to report that Cuba’s easternmost city is now fully recovered from Matthew and encourage holidaymakers to Cuba to visit this popular tourist attraction.

Currently the city has a capacity of 210 standard rooms provided by three hotels, three hostels and a beachfront villa. Amenities are modest and include WiFi in the common areas however, it is the stunning views and unique gastronomic offerings that make Baracoa a must see for holidaymakers visiting the Caribbean island. Though few in number, each of Baracoa’s hotels have something unique to offer its guests.

While the La Rusa Hotel is famous for hosting notable guests including Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara, the Porto Santo Hotel is located at the entrance to the very bay that Christopher Columbus landed during one of his discovery trips. At the El Castillo Hotel, located on one of the city’s highest points, guests can enjoy stunning view from this former military fortress.

Recommended dining options in the city include La Punta- a former defence fortress located close to Baracoa’s calming waters. Rancho Toa offers its customers the opportunity to enjoy roasted pork and teti- a local tiny fish. Additionally customers of Rancho Toa can venture out on a flat bottom boat tour through the Toa River.

Cuba welcomed near four million visitors in 2016, a 13 per cent increase on 2015. Much of the increase has been owed to a growth in the number of flights to Cuba from North America following an improvement in relations between Cuba and the US.
