Lisa Bonner, of HelloBeautiful, recently compiled a list of some of the must-see attractions and activities in Cuba, with a focus on Havana. The list offers some of the best sites to explore in Cuba, as well as some of the best restaurants at either end of the price spectrum. With so much culture, history, and stunning natural beauty, Cuba offers something for everyone.

It is still possible for Americans to see Cuba, but travel to the island from the US requires jumping through some hoops now that Trump has reinstated travel restrictions. But for those intrepid travellers who are undaunted by the changes and head to Cuba anyway, Lisa Bonner of HelloBeautiful has considered the island’s many charms and listed the best things to see, eat and drink while in Cuba.

What to see

There is no shortage of things to see in Havana, Cuba’s vibrant capital. But Havana’s Old Town retains much of its Old World elegance and is arguably the city’s most charming district. A short walk from the shady "Parque Central" will lead visitors to a number of noteworthy sites, including El Capitolio, the Alicia Alonso Grand Theatre of Havana, and the "Museo de la Revolucion", one of the best places in the city to explore Cuba’s history. Just a stone’s throw from the park is El Floridita, the watering hole made famous by Ernest Hemingway.

For those who want to explore more of Hemingway’s ties to the island, the long-time home of the author is a short drive outside the city. Finca Vigia remains almost entirely as it was when Hemingway was forced to leave Cuba prior to the Revolution. His beloved boat, the Pilar, is also on display.

Without question, one of the best ways to see Havana is simply to stroll along the Malecon, the seawall that connects much of the city. It offers stunning views of the city, particularly at sunset, when the pastel-hued buildings are bathed in golden hour sunlight.

What to eat and drink

In Cuba, some of the best meals are to be had in the most nondescript of places. One such place is La Guarida, located in what could easily appear to be an abandoned building, albeit one with a beautifully ornate staircase. Follow the staircase to the fourth floor and you’ve arrived at one of the city’s most famous restaurants, visited by none other than Beyonce. It’s one of the city’s more expensive restaurants, but is well worth the cost.

"La Juliana" is at the other end of the spectrum. It doesn’t have the elegant atmosphere of La Guarida, but the food is what makes it legendary, and is much more affordable.

Another not-to-be-missed site in Havana is the Hotel Nacional, one of the city’s most storied establishments. It was once the haunt of Mafia brass and was owned by former dictator Fulgencio Batista. Among the hotel’s famous clientele are Errol Flynn, Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, and Rita Hayworth, as well as a host of mob bosses. The hotel’s gardens are lovely and offer a great view of the Malecon and the sea.

The beach

No trip to Cuba would be complete without seeing the island’s incredible beaches, and one of the best places to do this is Varadero. The resort town is a short drive from Havana, but offers miles of stunning beaches as well as an 18 hole golf course. There are also plenty of options for dining and shopping.

Bonner’s list offers a great start for a first-time visitor to Cuba, but really just scratches the surface of what this beautiful country has to offer.
