Harvard University recently announced plans to continue to support its students who wish to do research in Cuba. The announcement comes on the heels of an announcement by the Trump administration that it will reinstate travel restrictions between the US and Cuba. Harvard plans to continue offering support to its students who are doing research for a thesis or dissertation on the island.

Harvard continues support for travel to Cuba

Harvard University recently announced that it will continue to support its students who wish to travel to Cuba, despite growing tensions between the US and Cuba under the Trump administration.

The White House recently announced new restrictions on travel and trade to Cuba, a move which will prohibit most individual visits to the country. The new restrictions will also prohibit Americans from visiting a list of restricted businesses and hotels which are affiliated with the Cuban government.

Erin E. Goodman, Associate Director of Academic Programs at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, said that students who intend to travel to Cuba for graduate-level research must follow all government regulations and secure the necessary paperwork for their trip.

According to Goodman, these students are required to have letters verifying that they are partaking in academic research in order to obtain licenses from the Rockefeller Center, which oversees all University travel to Cuba. During their time on the island, students must also maintain a log of their academic work, she said.

In spite of the new government rules, however, Goodman stated that the Center still intends to run semester-length study abroad programs at the University of Havana, assuming that there is enough student interest to offer such a program.

According to Goodman:

“We continue to be committed to academic partnerships and research endeavors between our two countries.”

Liz Marr, the communications and training development manager at Harvard Global Support Services—a group that serves as a first point of contact for international travel challenges—agreed.

“We’re committed to supporting Harvard’s travellers and helping to ensure that they travel abroad safely and in accordance with federal regulations.”

Said Mrs Marr. She also commented that several of the University’s offices are currently reviewing the Trump administration’s new travel regulations to determine how they may affect student, faculty and staff travel to Cuba under Harvard’s general license for international travel.

According to Marr, Global Support Services will communicate new guidance regarding student travel to Cuba in the next few weeks. In spite of the announcement by the Trump administration that it was reinstating restrictions on US travel to Cuba, there is still uncertainty about the degree to which Americans will be prohibited from visiting the island.
