FTI and Louvre announce the management of new hotels in Cuba

Posted: 16-May-18 07:24

Entering Cuba’s hotel sector for the first time, German-based FTI Group and France’s Louvre hotel chain signed an agreement for the management of a variety of hotel properties in the island. In the case of Louvre, it signed a letter of intent to oversee all the new Cubanacan properties recently unveiled in Sagua La Grande during the celebration of FITCuba 2018. Also during the fair Iberostar announced its partnership with Gaviota for the management of the new Hotel Packard in Havana.

FTI and Louvre announce the management of new hotels in Cuba

During FITCuba 2018’s closing ceremony last 5th May, Cuban Minister of Tourism, Manuel Marrero, announced a series of bilateral agreements and fruitful negotiations that had taken place during this year’s fair, which launched the province of Villa Clara as the country’s renewed and refreshed emerging destination, offering the perfect combination of sun and beach with an added plus of historic and cultural riches.

One of said agreements was German-based FTI Group’s signing of a contract to manage a selection of (as of yet unveiled) hotels in Cuba and launch a new daily flight frequency between Santa Clara and Europe starting next winter.

The other big agreement that resulted from the celebration of Cuba’s biggest annual tourism fair was the signing of a letter of intent between France’s Louvre Hotels and Cubanacan for the management of not one, but all the new hotels that recently sprung up in the fully renovated city of Sagua La Grande, arguably Villa Clara’s most colourful and culture-rich city.

In addition to these two agreements, Marrero also revealed the signing of a contract between Spanish hotel chain Iberostar and Cuba’s Gaviota for the management of the new Hotel Packard in Havana, currently in its last stages of construction and due to open in a couple of month’s time. Perfectly set in a mid-way point between the scenic Paseo del Prado and the famous seawall promenade of Malecon, this latest five-star property will be the latest cry in fashionably luxurious Havana hotels, following in the footsteps of the lavish Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski.

For long Cuba has needed to upgrade its tourism offer and elevate standards to lure wealthier visitors and compete with the likes of Cancun and the Dominican Republic. While tourism revenue in the island has continued to consistently increase over the years, the amount of money spent per visitor was hitting all-time lows. Something needed to be done to remedy this. Whilst Cuba’s beach resorts had successfully continued to fill up capacity season after season, they had mostly attracted budget and mid-range travellers but have failed to seduce high-end holidaymakers. The new luxury builds in Havana aim to drastically change that.

To this end, Cuba also recently unveiled the building of Havana’s tallest hotel, which will stand 154 metres tall and will tower over the FOCSA building, currently the city’s tallest and dating back to 1956. It will be strategically positioned at the heart of downtown in the municipality of Vedado, just steps away from the legendary Tryp Habana Libre (former Havana Hilton) and will more than double its height.

Cuba’s strong bet on the luxury travel market is evident in the star-rating of the new hotels being built in Havana, with French hotelier Accor set to manage another new hotel in Prado y Malecon, The Regis Havana, a boutique property that will boast 50 standard rooms, five suites and a pent-house suite, all spread out over six levels.

Speaking about the fair’s success, which this year was dedicated to the UK with a sun and beach theme, Marrero added that 60 per cent of participants had attended the previous year’s edition while 40 per cent had made it to Cuba to attend FITCuba for the first time. There were a total of 3319 participants from 62 countries, including 168 specialised press members from around the world.

During his closing speech Marrero announced that next year’s fair, FITCuba 2019, would be celebrated in Havana, to coincide with the city’s 500th anniversary. Spain was announced as the guest of honour and a certificate was handed to Spanish Ambassador in Havana, Juan Jose Buitrago de Benito, who thanked the gesture with kind words.
