The Guardian tells us tips to explore Cuba by Campervan

Cuba is known for its fine weather, intriguing culture and stunning beaches – so what better way to tour the country than by campervan? Go at your own pace and discover a wealth of hidden villages, where you can linger on a sun-drenched patio for a bite to eat before hopping back in your van to take to the road.

The Guardian tells us tips to explore Cuba by Campervan

According to a report by The Guardian, state-approved vans give visitors licence to roam Cuba’s mountains, beaches and towns. This new government initiative is the first of its kind since the failed venture in the 1990s, and gives tourists to Cuba a whole host of options when it comes to exploration. Best of all, at an average of $180 per day, the cost of a campervan works out to about the same as Cuba’s exorbitant car hire and standard hotel room.

With a campervan, it’s possible to travel the 800-mile round trip to Trinidad, while taking in Santa Clara and other less-visited spots that deserve to be seen. From Vinales in the west to Cayo Coco on the central northern coast, there are 20 camping spots, where campers can hook up to electricity and eliminate waste. It’s also possible to ask the friendly people of Cuba if you can pay to use their power and bathroom as you roam.

The best part of “campervanning” across Cuba is that you are not tied to any particular place. Wild camping is allowed, so you can essentially go anywhere and explore wherever the road leads you. It also means that you can see the lesser-known, less visited areas of the island, and discover the true gems you might otherwise miss.

The Gran Parque Natural Topes de Collantes is where you’ll find the Caburní waterfall. It’s a popular day trip from Trinidad, though most people head to Parque el Cubano, which borders Trinidad. However, with a campercan, you’re free to explore the less travelled route to the Nengoa waterfall in Guanayara park, where tourists can bask in its splendour without the crowds.

Trinidad is one of the most tourist-filled towns in Cuba, and with good reason – it showcases Cuban history so wonderfully over the last 500 years. It’s also an easy place to stay if you want a break from the campervan, with private rentals (Casa particulares) and verandas filled with hammocks, ferns and goatskin chairs for relaxing evenings. There’s plenty to do here as well, with paladares, arts and craft stalls, dance schools and much more.

When you’re ready to move on, you’ll be glad you have the campervan as you can travel to Peninsula de Ancon, located 10km south of Trinidad, which has one of the best beaches on Cuba’s south coast.
