Havana is not just Cuba's vibrant capital where everything happens and around which the whole island revolves; Havana has a certain and peculiar magic of its own even if stripped of its privileged title of capital. As a matter of fact, it was after its own merit that it earned its position as capital and it did so in 1556 after being declared the island's most desirable, best strategically located port for trade. Today, the trading may be languishing, yet the city holds more treasures than can be counted and people all over the world come rushing to visit it for a kaleidoscope of reasons (and before it soon changes).

In Cuba, modern city living can't be witnessed or appreciated anywhere else better than in Havana. This is a place where the old, the old-fashioned and the past fantastically, sometimes seamlessly, sometimes strikingly collide with the new and modern. This rather unique collision is taken in their stride by the lively habaneros who are born under these and many other contradictions. Havana is the beating soul of the country in many aspects, in most, one could say, but beyond that it is also full of riveting history, home to some of the most memorable and historic of movements and some of the best preserved historic centres in the entire island and the world. Add a touch of salsa, throw in a pinch of conga beats and finish off with a few sprinkles of soulful blues and you have the recipe for one Latin America's most musically flavoursome of capitals.

Vintage magic that captures and captivates

This is a city that should be seen even if only for admiring its striking architecture. Havana is the place where you will find the finest examples of avant-garde Art Deco, ornate Baroque buildings and stunning neo-classical constructions sitting alongside eclectic styles of all sizes and shapes – all of these perfectly coexisting in melodious harmony. It's a city that baffles and astounds those with a love for the quirky, the marvellous, the magnificent, the admirable, the decaying and the odd. Yes, some buildings are badly dilapidated, yes, some once grand mansions are flaking, crumbling and succumbing to the passage of time...yet all of this incredibly adds to the experience; eerie at times, euphoric at others. It's a place of contrasts, of mixes and matches, and it is ultimately up to the traveller what to make of this rare and wonderful collage.

50s Chevrolets, Buicks and Hudsons - the allure of vintage cars

Dubbed a rolling car museum by many connoisseurs and car aficionados you will be drawn to the landscape of shiny old wheels even if cars or old cars aren't your thing. You can't help but admire and be fascinated as how immaculately preserved some of these old engines are. Some indeed are known to stare in a trance-like state as several vintage relics pass you by on the road.

And it's Havana precisely the one place that houses the largest quantity of old cars in the whole island, which are also some of the best preserved and most beautiful to look at. A paradise for car lovers that adds to the whole feeling of stepping back time, a feeling that will strike you more than once in this wondrous city. As many of these cars have been converted into taxis nowadays it will be incredibly easy for you to hop in and enjoy the experience from one of these running marvels.

Cobblestone upon cobblestone of rich history

Old Havana is like a different world inside an already pretty different one. Officially declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is Havana's historic centre, also known as "Casco Viejo".

The feeling of entering the old town is like stepping into a small city within a city that's a few centuries older than the one that contains it. From stunningly well-preserved, brightly coloured and beautifully restored colonial mansions to narrow cobblestone alleys that give way to the most charming and lively of cafes, Old Havana is quickly embedded in the heart of many visitors, and at each turn there's a bit of history to be learned.

A place serious about its music - Salsa, jazz and blues

The place where African folklore, Spanish traditions and modern beats collide, Havana is a serious music lover's dream come true. Whether you want to salsa-dance to your heart's content, be it learn a few moves or simply enjoy the music as an spectator, the city is littered with places where you can listen to and enjoy many a salsa performance. It's up to you to join in the crowd or seat and admire the professionals.

Downtown Havana is where you can get a full flavour of all the music this country has to offer, be it the traditional tunes made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club (sung by most of the music groups you'll find in Old Havana bars and cafes) the cabaret-like shows at the world-famous Tropicana or the soulful Jazz tunes at many of the city's Vedado district hangouts...this is a city filled with music pouring from every corner, inhabited by music-loving and dancing enthusiasts.
