Holidays in Santiago De Cuba

If you've arrived to Cuba searching for natural surroundings and life in the slow lane, then keep moving. Santiago de Cuba is a notoriously busy urban centre, to put it politely. But while some see a concrete jungle worth doing most anything to avoid, others see Santiago from a different angle-as the hotbed of Cuban history and culture that it really is. If your dream is to visit Cuba's still-beating cultural heart, then you've come to the right place.

The fifth Cuban settlement founded by Spaniards, Santiago de Cuba played the role of Cuba's capital for over six decades during the 16th century. Actually, it is the most iconic Caribbean city of Cuba.

Much of what we now identify as classically "Cuban" has its origins right here in Santiago. Unique Afro-Caribbean influences from neighboring Hispaniola (now Dominica Republic and Haiti) have shaped the town into something totally unique, and from dance styles like son and salsa, to religions like santeria, to the Cuban Revolution itself, Santiago has in many ways defined Cuba's path over the centuries.

If you can deal with the heat, the pollution, the sometimes too much friendly population, you'll find one of Cuba's true gems waiting for you to explore-and there will be far fewer tourists than in Havana anyway! Are you up for an adventure?

Living History

As one of Cuba's most storied cities, modern Santiago de Cuba is full of history waiting to be discovered around nearly every corner.

El Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca del Morro-we'll call it the San Pedro fort, for short-at the entrance to Santiago harbour is truly an imposing site. Once sacked by Captain Henry Morgan himself, the modern incarnation of the fort houses a fine museum dedicated to the area's history of piracy.

Santiago is also home to the oldest Cuban residence still in existence-la Casa de Diego Velazquez. Dating back to 1522, the official residence of Cuba's first governor now sports period-specific furniture to give you an idea of what life was like back then. And, if you can't get enough of Senor Velazquez, his remains are said to be located beneath the city's stunning main cathedral.

Lastly, no historical journey through Santiago would be complete without a visit to el Cuartel Moncada-the Moncada Barracks. The site of Fidel Castro's first failed coup attempt, the modern incarnation includes one of the island's finest museums, of course dedicated to the events that took place here.

Cuban Culture

If history isn't doing it for you, Santiago de Cuba is also one of the island's premiere cultural destinations.

One of the city's most famous cultural spots is el Museo Municipal Emilio Bacardi Moreau-the Bacardi Museum. The family's original distillery was located here, and their extensive art collection was seized after the Revolution and turned into one of Cuba's most interesting and eclectic museums.

But if you were hoping for some more "lively" culture, don't worry-Santiago has just what you need. Head to Calle Heredia for one of the island's most happening music scenes. The street brings together an eclectic mix of tourists and locals of all ages for what is without a doubt one of the Caribbean's best dance parties, and if you want something different, you have more just heading down the street.
