Holidays in Trinidad

The charming colonial town of Trinidad is without a doubt Central Cuba's biggest tourism draw. Two centuries ago this place was drowning in sugar plantation money. Though things have slowed down since then this legacy, lives on in the town's striking historic mansions. But Trinidad isn't just an outdoor museum-some of Cuba's hottest live music venues bring the town centre to life at night, while a few of the island's greatest natural treasures rest just a short trip away.

Founded all the way back in 1514, the town of Trinidad is one of Cuba's most historic settlements. From the early days when Hernan Cortes recruited conquistadors for his expedition to Mexico to the town's role at the heart of one of the world's foremost sugar-producing regions, the case for making the entire town centre a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 was strong.

Trinidad continues to play an important role as one of Cuba's primary tourism destinations, but don't worry-the industry energizes the town without removing even a bit of its charm. From the sound of horses clip-clopping along the cobblestone streets, to the pastel-coloured homes lining each block, to the smell of tobacco smoke lazily drifting from locals gathered in the parks and plazas, Trinidad is a true feast for your senses embodying everything "Cuba".

A Town Lost in Time

A long time ago, Trinidad was one of the Caribbean's most cosmopolitan cities. Its streets were lined with the mansions of many Spanish landowners, whose fortunes were made almost exclusively in the sugar industry. But funnily enough, it was this same industry that sealed the town's fate. The late 19th century brought lower sugar prices as well as the end of slavery, a key component to the industry's profitability in Cuba.

Few places in the world have experienced such a rapid change in fortunes, and that's what makes Trinidad so magical. A visit here is like visiting a prosperous mid-19th century town frozen in time, and serious preservation efforts enacted by the Cuban government only serve to protect and enhance the town's charm.

Live Music for Dancing the Night Away

But don't for a second think that Trinidad is a town without life! In fact, if you're looking for the liveliest of traditional Cuban music and dance scenes, this might be it.

If you're not much of a dancer yourself, the place to start might be some salsa lessons offered by the town's Casa de la Cultura. From there, feel free to head out to any number of venues, including the underground Cueva Ayala-a cave spectacularly converted into a dance club.

Additionally, Trinidad is recognized for its strong Afro-Cuban heritage, which of course manifests itself in music and dance. While you visit, check out the rumba music and dancing emanating from many of the city's venues.

Outside of Town

The Valle de los Ingenios-Valley of the Sugar Mills-is located outside the town. Home to the remains of over 50 mills and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a tour offered via steam-powered train is a must for any history buff.

Additionally the region is also home to natural wonders-the nearby Escambray Mountains offer hiking and bird watching galore, while the Playa Ancon, perhaps southern Cuba's most beautiful beach, is just a short trip away-even reachable via bicycle!
