Cuba Entry Requirements for British and Irish Passport Holders

Cuba: entry requirements

Let's take a look at the Cuban entry requirements for British and Irish passport holders, one step at a time:

Passports

Citizens of the UK and Ireland must have a valid passport in order to visit Cuba. Furthermore, it's necessary that your passport is valid not only upon your arrival date in Cuba but until your departure date as well! As a general rule of thumb, you should make sure that your passport is valid at least until six months after you plan to leave the country. This is because Cuban passport requirements occasionally do change-a minimum of six months should give you enough of a window to stay within any requirements laid out by Cuban law.

Return Tickets

This one is simple-before you depart for Cuba, it's necessary that you already have a ticket to leave the country when your trip is over! This should generally be checked even before leaving the United Kingdom or Ireland. If you don't have it, you may be forced to purchase one at a price much higher than you would have paid independently.

Tourist Cards

Every tourist to Cuba, regardless of his or her origin, is required to purchase a tourist card. This document essentially acts as your visa during your time in Cuba, and you must hand it in to authorities upon leaving the country or you will face a relatively steep fine.

Tourist cards for both UK and Irish citizens are good for an initial period of 30 days. Should you choose to remain in Cuba for more time, citizens of both countries are able to add an additional 30 days to their card at a price of $25CUC. If you'd like to remain in Cuba for more than 60 days as a UK or Irish tourist, you'll have to briefly depart from the country in order to purchase a new card-something that is popularly done on other nearby Caribbean islands.

As part of your holiday with us, we will provide you with your tourist card automatically at a cost of £15 per traveler. We can send all tourist cards to you in the post along with your other travel documents, which certainly beats heading to the Cuban consulate in London during their limited office hours! If for whatever reason you prefer to pick up your tourist card in person, you can come by our office at any time-no appointment necessary.

Address in Cuba

When filling out your tourist card you must include your address in Cuba. Make sure to include the address of a legitimate hotel or legal casa particular, even if you plan to travel around the country. This will help you to avoid any conflicts or confusion with Cuban immigration officers.

Imports and Exports

Generally speaking, you can bring all manner of personal items into Cuba with you. Cameras, electronic devices, up to 2.5 litres of alcoholic beverages per person and a carton of cigarettes as well as medications for personal use are all fair game. For any items staying in Cuba - which as a tourist you're most likely not to have - the law says that a duty of 100% will be charged after the first CUC$50 worth of goods. This rule is sporadically enforced, but be prepared to explain what's in your luggage if you have to!

When it comes to exports, you can take up to 50 cigars out of the country with no questions asked. If you want to take even more, you won't have a problem as long as you can prove via a receipt that you bought the cigars from an official state store. You may only bring two bottles of liquor out of the country. Violators may face fines and/or confiscation.
